Further Context

There has been an explosion of Kink sexuality across all levels of society in the last few decades. Kink is just one aspect of a broader expansion of sexual expression that emerging globally that is certainly unprecedented in the history of civilization.

The intention of Galen’s work is to lay a foundation for how Kink-oriented individuals can begin to consciously, exuberantly embrace their inherent desires. The approach is designed to help the client(s) establish a negotiated, consensual path to their authentic Kink desires with their partners and untangle all the internal resistances that may hold their desire back or keep it hidden.

Kink is a very complex sexuality. It requires mature, responsible, adult sensibilities to engage partners in healthy, consensual, fulfilling ways. It requires coming to terms with the sex-negative fear, shame, trauma, confusion and sexual dishonesty prevalent within ourselves and the culture.

This complexity and the rapid emergence of Kink into mainstream culture has left many of the current academic and clinical models of sex therapy and psychology inadequate if not obsolete.

I believe it will be important to explore and create new therapeutic approaches that better support clients to embrace their authentic desires in healthy ways and come to terms with the challenges of doing so.

For example I believe Kink-oriented sexuality, or what I call Fetishsexuality, should be recognized by the academic and clinical psychological communities as an authentic sexual orientation. It fits the APA’s ( American Psychological Association) current definition of sexual orientation that includes straight, gay, lesbian and bi-sexual (

A Fetishsexual, by my definition is a person driven to orgasm or other deep erotic state through their innate, inherent, ongoing desire for a particular range of mythic, archetypal, symbolic sexual engagement. I call this persistent inner desire their Personal Erotic Myth. A PEM contains the fantasy imagery, storylines, mythic archetypal personas and counter-personas, props, attire, dialogue and actions that drive one’s sexual desire.

Some people are quite conscious of their PEM(s) and for others it lurks below the surface of their conscious awareness, even when erotically engaged. A PEM typically falls within a broad range of psychological, emotional and physical power exchange dynamics. These dynamics can be negotiated and explored between consenting adults with similar yearnings.

Each side of the power-exchange expresses as one of paired archetypal sexual personas such as dominant/submissive, sadist/masochist, and a pantheon of sub-categories of each. Abundant examples of these pairings can be found within emerging Kink, Fetish, D/s-BDSM and other alternative subcultures.

Like other sexual orientations, Fetishsexuals have particular sexual preferences, look for compatible romantic, life-partners, and seek to join with others in communities. For these reasons, I believe Fetishsexuality qualifies according to APA definitions as a sexual orientation.

For those working with Kink-oriented clients, this lecture will provide a preliminary basis for introducing a Kink-positive therapeutic model in academia and into clinical practice.
