If someone is experiencing compulsive use of porn or sex, often called porn/sex-addiction, the Sexual Integration approach considers that the behavior could be a symptom of an underlying psychological conflict, not a psychological nor physical addiction.

In these cases, the porn they view, and the frequency may not the problem. The client’s particular sexual interests from mild to wild may not be the problem. Wanting sex every day may not the problem. Wanting more or different sex than their partner may not the problem.

The problem may be the paralyzing fear or shame they feel of ever revealing the true nature and depths of their sexual desire to those close to them. The problem can be the harm caused in their relationships by the cover-up they must relentlessly maintain as they pursue their desires in secrecy. They may be in deep psychological distress from the sneaking, lying, betrayal, guilt, irresponsibility, fear of discovery and most damaging of all – the loss of personal integrity and trust that the cover-up demands.

The core conflict may be the internal psychological struggle the client has between their innate sexual desires and the shame, fear, or harsh moral judgments about their sexuality, embedded from their childhood. Past trauma or shaming may have disempowered them in some way from having sexual agency or trusting others with their sexuality. The conflict may also center around fundamental sexual differences with their partner’s sexuality. Their partners, religion or community may not condone nor encourage their sexual honesty, style nor frequency.

The Sexual Integration approach to dealing with sexual compulsivity starts with allowing the client to define or begin to discover what their innate sexuality looks like. It supports them to understand what interferes with or resists it honest expression, and then develop a personal methodology to integrate their sexuality into their everyday life in a way that is in integrity with their values, agreements, responsibilities and relationships.

SIT considers that when a client learns to claim their birthright as a sexual being, they will realize there is nothing about their authentic sexual nature that deserves to be covered-up.

SIT helps clients begin to own their sexual truth in an empowered, confident and shame-free way.

Another important issue, specific to couples, that SIT might approach differently than the sex/porn addiction model are perceived or actual Erotic Mismatches.

SIT promotes the value and importance of the client learning to be honest and transparent in explaining their desires. SIT helps clients understand they have every right to negotiate for what they desire in their sexual connection with their partners.

The client learns how to negotiate with their partners in a direct way to give this important aspect of themselves the respect it deserves, if not in fact adding greater pleasure, intimacy and trust into their mutual sexual engagements.

This of course means they may discover they are not matched sexually, or they could find new vistas of pleasure opening up with their partner that never felt possible previously.

This will be complex relational and personal work for both the client and their partner to undertake. SIT supports the client and their partner to do the deep personal psychological work to get in integrity with themselves and then each other, in how they negotiate their sexuality and their relationship.

This presentation will introduce a psychological model of the sexual psyche and therapeutic techniques drawn from CBT, depth, analytical, positive and transpersonal theories of psychology.

Learning Objectives:

List 5 key steps for clients to shift from secretive, compulsive sexual behaviors to bring their sexuality into integrity with their values, responsibilities and relationships.

Describe 3 strategies clients in Erotic mismatches can use to renegotiate the basic differences in their sexualities and expand what is pleasurable.

Discuss how early life experiences of sexual shame or trauma interfere with sexual development and sexual arousal in later life.

Analyze the results from 5000 participants to the Personal Erotic Myth Survey to compare sexual fantasies, porn viewing, masturbation frequencies, early sexual violations, age of onset of sexual fantasy and masturbation sorted by various demographics.
